UL Lafayette has joined some 1,300 other American universities in enacting a smoke-free campus policy. UL's policy becomes effective Aug. 1 in response to a new state law requiring public universities to create smoke-free policies. Heretofore smoking was permitted on campus beyond 25 feet from building entrances.
The university says in a press release it is "developing materials to educate the campus community and visitors about the new policy" and that "faculty members and staff will be directed to smoking cessation resources" as part of a Breathe Easy educational campaign.
Smoking will still be permitted inside one's vehicle parked on campus parking lots or public streets but will be prohibited inside parking garages. It will also be allowed in tailgating areas during athletic events. Electronic cigarettes will still be OK in most outdoor areas but will be prohibited indoors.
