Despite the bizarre fake handgun incident that ultimately led to his resignation, former Lafayette Regional Airport Aviation Director Greg Roberts will escape prosecution.
After 21 years at the helm of the airport, Roberts' career, as first reported by The IND, came to an end shortly after a June 11 incident inside his office when he pulled a mock pistol from his desk and pointed it at an unsuspecting engineer. Roberts was placed on administrative leave and resigned several days later.
That engineer was George Glaubrecht, president and CEO of Domingue, Szabo & Associates, who was working with the airport on the new Bell Helicopter facility.
According to a report from the Lafayette Parish Sheriff's Office, the incident happened after a dispute between Roberts and Glaubrecht over who was responsible for the costs of an environmental impact study, prompting the former aviation director to grab the fake gun and point it in the engineer's direction while commenting "notice my finger was not on the trigger."
Aside from Roberts, no one else in the meeting was aware that the gun was fake.
According to a report from the Acadiana Advocate, District Attorney Mike Harson, on Wednesday, said Glaubrecht has decided against pursuing the matter any further.
"We decided not to prosecute the matter," Harson tells the Advocate. "We have discussed the matter with the victim in the case, and he has indicated a desire to drop the matter and not pursue. We will follow his wishes."
