KATC owns annual AP awards

KATC TV3 was the big dog at Saturday's Louisiana Associated Press Broadcasters awards luncheon on the LSU campus. The Lafayette ABC affiliate dominated in its weight class, bringing home 28 awards including the coveted "Best Newscast" trophy.

KATC also brought home first-place awards for Best General News, Continuing Coverage, Best Sports Story, Breaking Weather, Best Sports Cast, Best In-Depth Series and Story of the Year. Steven Albritton, now the station's Good Morning Acadiana co-anchor, was awarded first place for Reporter of the Year.

KATC's rival down Eraste Landry Road, KLFY, garnered first-place awards for Best Videography and Best Website, but only managed five total awards, a poor showing for the once-dominant local television news station and a reflection perhaps that the "house cleaning" new management is doing within the newsroom - punctuated last week by the firing of longtime anchor/investigative reporter Chuck Huebner - is long overdue.
