EatLafayette Dish of the Day: Bread & Circus' Fried chicken

by Kari Walker

A buttermilk brined bird and side of mac and cheese ready for today's lunch

Tucked off Bendel Road near Pinhook sits newcomer Bread & Circus Provisions - this growing hot-spot started out as a weekly vendor at the Horse Farm market, but has taken roots to a full-service restaurant and deli.

The set lunch menu features sandwiches like corned beef and fresh salads and even culinary creations for acquired tastes - hog head cheese, anyone? If you can think of a classic, odds are Bread & Circus has it and put their own twist on a dish elevating and refining the flavors.

Bread & Circus' fried chicken, mac and cheese and slaw

Today's dish of the day is the Wednesday plate lunch special and one of those classics that might be the best in town: Fried chicken and mac and cheese. This bird is perfection from the first bite - a golden crispy crust and juicy center is attributed to a buttermilk and hot sauce brine chef Manny Augello lets the chicken stew in for several days. But, just any old chicken won't do for Augello - this hen is a pasture raised chicken and that's basically the crème de la crème of chicken quality.

The sides are equally tasty and the smoked Gouda mac and cheese and buttermilk slaw served with the dish complete the fried goodness to make a great meal.

Housemade Bloody Mary mix and pecan butter on the market shelves

While you're waiting for your lunch to be served, check out the market side of Bread & Circus where you can pick up some local goods from area vendors, or products made by Bread & Circus - the Bloody Mary mix and pecan butter are two staples begging to live in your pantry. You might also want to check out what's happening at Bread & Circus when the sun goes down - there's a special late night service going on so you'll never have to settle for greasy drive-thru tacos again after a few cocktails out on the town. And, if you miss the late night, swing by on a Saturday morning to see what's cooking at brunch.
