Return of the dude

by Walter Pierce

Longtime subdudes frontman Tommy Malone returns to Lafayette for an intimate performance Thursday in Vermilionville's Performance Center.

He's been a fixture on the New Orleans music scene for decades, a deft guitarist and gifted songwriter, and he's returning to Lafayette for a one-night-only solo performance Thursday at Vermilionville. Tommy Malone, longtime frontman for the trailblazing subdudes who has enjoyed regional success on the side as a singer-songwriter, is celebrating the release of his latest record, Poorboy, an 11-song effort that many critics are hailing as his best ever. The release comes on the heels of his 2013 album Natural Born Days.

As Offbeat Magazine recently put it, "It's a crime that Tommy Malone isn't better known around the world. He is a triple threat - beautiful singer, fine songwriter, and killer guitarist." Or as impresario Todd Mouton of Live in Louisiana, the concert's presenter, notes, "As a solo artist and with the subdudes, Malone has developed his gift for stripping songs to their essences and building them back up again on record and in live performance."

Lafayette's Caleb Elliott opens the show at 6:30 p.m. followed by Malone at 7:15. Advance discounted tickets are available through Live in Louisiana's website; tickets are $20 and $25 at the door and food/beverages will be available for purchase at the Performance Center.
