There's a cheer in my beer

by Walter Pierce

The Gulf Brew beer fest returns to its roots Downtown, bigger and sudsier than ever.

Beer geeks, beer snobs, beer enthusiasts, beer aficionados - call them what you will they'll be out in droves Saturday for the ninth annual Gulf Brew beer festival at Parc International in Downtown Lafayette. The 2014 iteration of the fundraiser for the Acadiana Center for the Arts returns to Downtown after a being held last year at the Horse Farm. Last year also marked the best change ever in Gulf Brew: moving it from the swelter of July to October, which not only offers milder weather but allows the festival to feature some fine fall brews that aren't available in the summer. New this year is spreading out the tasting tables instead of cramming everyone into one big tent.

"We're really looking forward to year eight of this fun event," says Bree Sargent, the AcA's education director. "We're working closely with local distributors, brewers and home brewers to showcase some really great beers. There will be some new things to try, some local favorites and a few things you can only try at Gulf Brew!"

There will also be live music on the big Parc International stage featuring Soul Express Brass Band, Sassafras Jubilee, and Yvette Landry and Sam Broussard.

"It's an incredible opportunity to come together as a community to celebrate our culture and all for a good cause," Sargent adds. "When people buy their tickets they are getting more than just an evening of beer - but their purchases allow us to continue our mission in bringing arts and culture to our unique city."

Speaking of which: Gulf Brew opens to ticket holders at 6 p.m. Saturday, but pre-taster tickets - $50 in advance, $55 at the gate - allow celebrants to get in at 5 and, well, pre-taste the 100 craft and micro brews on exhibit. General admission tickets are $30 ($35 at the gate). VIP tickets ($75 in advance, $80 at the gate) entitle holders to 5 p.m. entry, access to air-conditioned, catered tents, select brews and VIP-only restrooms.

Tickets can be purchased online at the AcA website, the box office at 101 W. Vermilion St. or by calling (337) 233-7060.
