‘Lafayette’ public art completed

Lafayette’s first new public art in a long while is now open for visitors at Parc Sans Souci Downtown. The YLafayette sculpture — so named for the absence of the Y in LAFAYETTE, allowing visitors to stand among the letters, arms raised, and create the missing letter (think Village People and “YMCA”) — was completed Thursday afternoon.

Over the last two days a crew dug a trench, filled it with cement from which rebar protruded. Wooden molds were set in place and more cement was poured into them to form the letters, which are about six feet tall.

Spearheaded by Downtown Lafayette Unlimited, the project began in September with a Civicside.com crowd-funding campaign that raised the $16,000 for the sculpture. It will be christened next week during a private champagne social to which donors have been invited.
