Lafayette one of 10 concert series winners

[Correction: An earlier version of this story said the LPTFA would receive $250,000 in matching funds for the concert series. In fact, the $250,000 is split among the 10 winning cities; Lafayette's share in $25,000. The story has been corrected to reflect the true amount.]

The Horse Farm will be the site next summer for a 10-week series of free, outdoor concerts featuring regional and national acts. The Hub City was announced as one of the winners Tuesday by Levitt Pavilions and the Mortimer & Mimi Levitt Foundation, which will give $25,000 in matching funds to the Lafayette Public Trust Financing Authority to stage the series.

The Levitt AMP [Your City] Grant Awards pitted scores of small and mid-sized cities, each of which made a pitch based on creative place-making projects and decided in party by the Internet voters in November. The pitch made by each city needed to meet three goals: amplify community pride and the city’s unique character; enrich lives through the power of free, live music; and illustrate the importance of vibrant public places.

It looks like we couldn’t go wrong with the Horse Farm, the 100-acre tract of land in the heart of the Lafayette that was saved from commercial development and will become a central park for the Hub City next year.

“Each made a compelling case for how the Levitt AMP Music Series will activate a public space and strengthen the social and economic fibers of their communities,” says Sharon Yazowski, executive director of Levitt Pavilions in a release announcing the winnders. “We’re incredibly excited to partner with each of the 10 winners and ensure their Levitt AMP Music Series is a success.”

Other winners include Cleveland, Miss; Middlesboro, Ky.; Sheboygan, Wis.; Denison, Texas; Anchorage, Alaska; Trenton, NJ; Bellingham, Wash.; Charlottesville, Va.; and Frederick, Md.
