BP expert: ‘no compelling evidence’ of spill sickness

A physician and toxicology expert called by BP as it opens its defense in the civil trial over the 2010 spill that released more than 3 million barrels of oil into the Gulf of Mexico testified that he saw “no compelling evidence” that the spill damaged the health of residents or cleanup workers, according to an account at nola.com. Robert Cox, who is also a professor at the University of Mississippi Medical Center, also said he doubts long-term studies will find chronic illnesses linked to the disaster.

The Justice Department is seeking the maximum civil penalty from BP — nearly $14 billion dollars.
