Two more candidates join 2015 sheriff's race

Following the recent announcement from Scott Police Chief Chad Leger, two new names have emerged in the race to become Lafayette Parish’s next sheriff.

Following the recent announcement from Scott Police Chief Chad Leger, two new names have emerged in the race to become Lafayette Parish’s next sheriff.

Mark T. Garber
John P. Rogers

Though neither has officially made an announcement, the two new candidates include John P. Rogers and Mark T. Garber.

Rogers made his intentions known though social media, with the Jan. 24 launch of a “John P. Rogers for Sheriff” Facebook page. Rogers, according to the page, has spent the majority of his career working under outgoing Sheriff Mike Neustrom where’s he’s been a deputy for the last 15 years. He also holds a law degree from Southern University.

The second candidate to recently enter the fold is Lafayette attorney Mark T. Garber, who confirmed his intentions to run in a Thursday evening phone call with The IND. Garber’s background is also in law enforcement, working four years as a federal criminal investigator before serving as an assistant district attorney in the 15th Judicial District from 2008 and 2014. He’s also a veteran of Operation Iraqi Freedom.
