2nd contender enters race for Elbert Guillory's Senate seat

The race for Elbert Guillory's District 24 seat in the Louisiana Senate just got interesting.

The race for Elbert Guillory's District 24 seat in the Louisiana Senate just got interesting.

Having hit the Republican big leagues after his theatrical and well-edited renunciation of the Democratic Party made a splash on Youtube, Guillory's looking toward bigger and better things. His defense last year of chicken boxing even earned him an exclusive role in a Daily Show skit. Among Louisiana politicians:

Guillory's pretty big. It's also highly unlikely, being a reborn Republican and all, that he'd win reelection in his primarily Democratic district, which covers most of St. Landry Parish, a chunk of North Lafayette, and parts of Breaux Bridge in St. Martin Parish.

So, Guillory's seat is up for grabs, and so far, we've got two contenders.

Coming out first was Democrat Gerald Boudreaux, who announced recently before a standing-room only crowd of hundreds at an event in Carencro (read more on that here).

Rep. Ledricka Thierry

Though Boudreaux's event is evidence that he's been out rallying the troops and raising money, his competition, who announced earlier today, will be tough. That candidate is District 40 state Rep. Ledricka Thierry, also a Democrat. While Thierry is tied to the coming start of this year's Legislative Session and unable to legally raise funds in that period, her native connection to St. Landry Parish will no doubt be a strength.

Expect a close race when the fall rolls around.
