_Dear Amanda,

Just how appropriate are flip flops? It's possible that I know someone who has a teenaged daughter who would wear them everywhere, if permitted. When do you draw the line at flip flops?

Signed,

Anonymous mom (who might be over the flip flops)_

First and foremost. Flip flops are for use in moderation. Unless you get a flop with some support. Click here for an awesome infographic from Huffington Post that shows just how serious improper use of the flip flop can be on your feet.

But, you have a teenager and they don't care about damaging the feet? Gotcha. Instead of preaching the detriments of over wearing flip flops, I'll offer some great alternatives.

The key in limiting flip flop wear is to find another shoe that can be slipped on as you roll out the door. You don't want to buckle or even bend over. Check out these options

The upscale flip flop — Find a better fabrication. We love these melon shiny little shoes at Vanessa V. as well as the reptile print sparkly pair over at Shoe La La. Both are a better way to do a flip flop if you're going somewhere besides the beach or the shower.

The Birk — Birkenstocks are back and there are a bevy of backless ones (and knock offs) all around town. This lineup at Shoe La La come in every color and style with a look that's laid back and earthy but still quite cool and, of course, comfy.

The espadrille/ slip on — Much like a pair of Toms, the slip on shoes we've spotted and espadrilles are a good way to forgo a flip flop but stay casual and wear with shorts. The metallic ones at Brother's on the Blvd dress things up a bit and the reptile slip ons at Shoe La La go with everything in your daughter's closet.

May the force be with you.
