Jenn Vella Stonicher of Play Acadiana And My First Luncheon has been named chairwoman of the Children's Activities committee of the Lafayette Chapter of the March of Dimes. Stonicher is chairing this committee in conjunction with the Saturday, May 5, Walk America event. The children's activities will be held immediately following the walk and are sponsored in part by Play Acadiana. The activities take place near the Main Pavilion at Girard Park. Mary Ann Mahtook of Advanced Imaging of Lafayette has received the President's Club 2006 Award (best account executive for the central region) and named to the 2006 Chairman's Circle (best account executive in the nation) at Alliance Imaging's national meeting in Dallas. In addition, Mahtook won the Plan Achievers Award for the central region for successfully meeting her budgetary goals for 2006. She has been the account executive for Advanced Imaging of Lafayette since 2005 and is responsible for the marketing and business development to create awareness for the center's services within the community.
Fertility & Women's Health Center of Louisiana, Women's & Children's Hospital, and Sheridan Healthcare announced the birth of Hope Elizabeth Hughes, the first baby born as a result of the GIFT OF HOPE program. Hope Elizabeth was born April 14 at 6:46 p.m., weighed 7 pounds and 2 ounces, and was 19" long. GIFT OF HOPE seeks to ease the high costs, both financially and emotionally, of infertility treatments for one couple per year who demonstrates both financial and medical needs for IVF. According to Resolve, the National Infertility Association, only a quarter of health care insurers offer coverage for infertility care. Depending on individual circumstances, IVF typically costs between $10,000 to $15,000 per cycle. As a result, as many as 50 percent of American couples who fail to conceive do not seek treatment due to financial reasons. Hope Elizabeth's parents, Laura and Terry Hughes of Lafayette, were the recipients of the GIFT OF HOPE 2006. The Hugheses were selected in May 2006 from more than 40 applications received from area couples seeking to be granted a free in vitro fertilization cycle in their efforts to conceive a child.
The Southwest Louisiana Area Health Education Center is accepting applications for its 2007 Medical Applications of Science for Health summer camp for high school students who have an interest in health care careers. M.A.S.H. offers students an opportunity to study college-level anatomy and physiology essential to health care professionals. This summer the camp will take place at two universities. The first is at UL Lafayette from Tuesday, July 10, through Saturday, July 21. The second will be held at McNeese State University from Tuesday, July 17, through Saturday, July 28. Students will be housed in a dormitory on the campus of the respective university. Students must have a 3.4 GPA to be considered for this program and must be entering the 10th-12th grade in the fall of 2007. Participants successfully completing the M.A.S.H. program will receive several hours of college credit, which may transfer to other Louisiana universities. The M.A.S.H. application and other necessary forms can be obtained from all high schools in SWLAHEC's 13-parish region or accessed online at www.swlahec.com.
