FALL INTO STYLE Fall fashion is again all over the map. The beloved boho look lingers along with modern style that’s sleek and chic with just a hint of mod.

by Amanda Jean Harris

Fall is the new year of style. September magazine issues thick as encyclopedias herald a serious return to fashion after lazy summer days. What was old becomes new again and what it means to be on trend just may require setting the clock back.

Perhaps the most alarming trend for this ’97 grad is a flavor of the ‘90s, which means what was my era of style (not so long ago, mind you) has been recycled with chunky Doc Martens, Mary Janes reborn and Seattle scene Nirvanaworthy flannel. We check in on some trends that can build a new wardrobe infusing pieces from past years and laying the foundation for timeless style. Trend and tradition meet in a way that means you won’t be throwing these pieces out this time next year.

THE SERIOUS FLARE

Nothing screams retro like a flare-bottom pant. Denim of this variety is super hot but for some body types isn’t the most flattering. Enter this lovely stretchy option from Vanessa V. with a denim look and a svelte cut perfect for longer tops and tall wedges.

THE PLAID BUTTON DOWN

The essential for fall weekends comes in a super soft lighter than traditional fabrication over at Brother’s on the Blvd. The classic plaid will work with layers — over a little distressed tank with sleeves rolled or under a denim vest. Pair with torn up jean shorts when temps are still warm and then with your favorite pair of boyfriend jeans later.

THE SKINNY DISTRESSED DENIM

For laid-back effortless cool, denim is the go-to. Add some ripped spots and a distressed vibe — rebel rocker. Where shall we begin with pairing these beauties from Vertage? My personal favorite is the great contrast. Think a silky tank and blazer with pointy toe heels and a chunky necklace. Try denim on denim with a worn chambray with sleeves rolled. Funky little T-shirts work perfectly with moto boots, and we love a boyfriend cardi for chilly nights.

THE MODERN TUNIC

Uber high side slits and a high-low hem were a summertime favorite over short shorts or swimwear. The shape transitions into fall with a dressed-up cut and chic hue in this neutral piece from Maven Womenswear. It’s a great option over super snug moto pants or leggings with a statement earring.

THE ECLECTIC TOP

The wardrobe staple for tops is a go-with-every-color easy cut like this Show Me Your Mumu gem from Hemline. It’s just right with those flares for fall, skinnies as well. Add to boyfriend jeans and a funky little flat. Throw on over leggings. When fall temps arrive in full force it will even work under a little fur vest.
