On Monday, the Cane Fire Film Series screens the French drama The New Girlfriend.

From Writer-Director François Ozon, The New Girlfriend tells the story of Claire who after the death of her best friend falls into a deep depression. Claire then makes a surprising discovery about her friend’s husband that gives her a new taste for life.

The film is a loose adaptation of a 15-page short story by Ruth Rendell, similar in tone and spirit to the television series Alfred Hitchcock Presents. In it, a woman discovers that her friend’s husband is a closet crossdresser. He becomes a girlfriend to her, but when he declares his love and tries to make love with her, she kills him.

The film was also among the official selections for both the Toronto International Film Festival and San Sebastian Film Festival in 2014.
