Boustany makes it official Monday

U.S. Rep. Charles Boustany, R-Lafayette, will make his bid to become the junior U.S. senator from Louisiana official Monday evening.

The six-term congressman and retired physician will formally announce his candidacy at 5:30 p.m. at his family home in Oaklawn subdivision in Lafayette. Boustany has represented Louisiana’s 3rd Congressional district since 2013; the 3rd was created after Louisiana lost a seat in the House of Representatives following the 2010 Census. He was first elected to the 7th Congressional District in 2004.

His fellow GOP congressman, Rep. John Fleming of Minden, has also announced his intention to run. Several other candidates are also eyeing the seat.

Boustany hopes to replace Sen. David Vitter, who announced during his concession speech following his loss in the Nov. 21 gubernatorial runoff that he would not seek re-election in 2016.
