LAFAYETTE, La. (AP) — UL Lafayette running back Elijah McGuire has been granted permission to play basketball for the Ragin Cajuns this season.

Basketball coach Bob Marlin and football coach Mark Hudspeth, who announced on Monday that McGuire would be a two-sport athlete at UL, say the 5-foot-11 McGuire is joining the basketball team immediately.

McGuire, who is from Houma, Louisiana, was a two-sport athlete at Vandebilt Catholic High School, where he started at quarterback in football and was an all-district guard in basketball.

During the 2015 football season, McGuire rushed for 1,058 yards and 13 touchdowns while catching 33 passes — three for TDs.

Marlin says the Cajuns are now eager to see what McGuire can do on the basketball court.

UL next plays at home Thursday night against South Alabama.
