J BURTON

Thursday, July 7

Blue Moon Saloon

Doors: 10 p.m.

After a three year stint as a dirty townie in Athens, GA, J Burton moved back home to Lafayette in 2004 and started a little folk band called Dire Wood. The band grew into to a five piece fully electrified rock mainstay and their 2008 release “The Escape” charted on college radio stations across the US. Then in 2009, inspired by the quirky rock of Brian Eno, J started the bombastic indie-pop group FIGHTs. That band’s 2013 release, Music For Villains, reached #1 in several markets upon it’s release. In February, 2016, he was the Rhum Room’s Featured Artist of the Month. Catch him live tonight.

KIP SONNIER

Thursday, July 7

Grouse Room

Doors: 9:30 p.m.

Kip's musical career started at 15. Originally a drummer, then a bass player for several years, fate put a six string in his hands that he has yet to put down. In his earliest days he was touring the Texas dance hall circuit with a band called Bayou, a band that included Kip, Trace Adkins and Steve Grisaffe, bass player and lead vocalist from River Road. Someone once said "Success breeds success", which in this case is true, because Sonnier later found himself in Roundup, a concerted effort that included Mercury recording artist Sammy Kershaw. Sonnier returned home, a veteran of the road, with the talents to prove it. And Lafayette's Yellow Rose became the proving ground and birthplace of Hurricane. The proof of their talents came to light as Hurricane swept the Times of Acadiana's Music Awards in five country music categories with Sonnier bringing home "Best Male Vocalist" and "Best Guitarist" and Hurricane bringing home "Best Band."
