When you enlist your really cute daughter for the proposal, you can’t go wrong. “He proposed with the help of our two-year-old daughter,” Maria says of the moment Andre popped the question.

Their daughter gave her homemade art that read, “Mommy, Do you want to be a Fontenot?” and Andre was on hand with roses and a ring.

“It was very, very, very sweet to include Cora Leigh,” Maria says. “It was adorable and I framed the piece of paper.”

The two met via mutual friends while at the neighborhood pool where they both lived. And they were wed at their home church in Lafayette — St. Pius.

The couple chose an intimate wedding from start to finish. It was important that the people they cared about most were present.

Maria wore a dress with a lace overlay over a champagne-colored bodice with a traditional feel including a sleeveless cut with sheath shape and buttons all the way up the back of the dress.

A violinist from the Acadiana Symphony Orchestra performed a piece at the wedding ceremony and Andre’s friend, who is a priest, sang an Ava Maria solo.

“There were a lot of beautiful touches,” Maria says.

Her bouquet was white and pink floral pieces by Something Borrowed Blooms — a new business in Lafayette that allows floral rental using artificial flowers that look anything but fake.

“It was beautiful,” Maria says. “They did everything with our flowers from the aisle runners to the ceremony and the reception.”

The couple celebrated with a reception at Espirit de Coeur including a wedding cake from Piece of Cake for her and a unique choice for the groom’s cake.

“Instead of a cake we had blueberry donuts by Jack’s Donuts because those are our favorite,” she says.

The most memorable moment for Maria, who hails originally from Vermont, was watching her aunt do their traditional family toast with Andre for the first time.

“We do it at all the family gatherings and it was the first time he heard it and that was such a merging of our families.”
