Four Lafayette deputies injured in accidental shooting

One Lafayette Parish Sheriff’s deputy was treated at a hospital and three others treated on the scene for minor injuries after a fifth deputy’s gun accidentally discharged at the Lafayette Parish Sheriff’s Office firing range.

According to LPSO spokesman John Mowell, the single round was discharged moments after a deputy had finished qualifying with his weapon. The four deputies were injured by bullet fragments from a ricochet; none was hit directly by a bullet. One was transported by ambulance to hospital for further treatment of shrapnel lodged below the knee. That deputy has since been released. The other three have also been medically cleared. Names of those involved have not been released.
