The local ABC affiliate reported yesterday that in the wake of Hurricane Ike, farm animals across South Louisiana drowned as storm surge rushed in from the Gulf. One Iberia Parish cattle rancher who temporarily transported his cattle to property he owns on Lewis Street — only after, he claims, the SugArena turned him away — is now facing charges. Rancher Mike Romero had lost a number of calves at his ranch near the Port of Iberia in Hurricane Rita, and he wasn't going to let that happen again.
Romero is vowing to fight the charges. "I can understand if I was looting or disrupting people, but none of that happened," he told the station.
