HONORING BOTH OF THEM

Thank you for this remarkable story ("Life Lesson," April 4). It is rare for the written word to so clearly capture the essence of people or situations. While it is unfortunate that it ended so abruptly, it gave hope that the leadership of our parish school system can come together in the best interest of our students and our community simply by talking to each other as friends.

This is a tough time. For the first time in 41 years, we are looking forward rather than backward. No longer may we simply maintain the status quo fostered by federally mandated supervision of our decisions. Instead, we have the opportunity and the challenge of determining how to satisfy the individual needs of each student in raising their performance levels and thus closing the achievement gap.

We may all learn from that last conversation between David Thibodaux and Dr. Easton. Doing so would be the best way that we can honor both of them.
