The flattering exposé on George Rodrigue was interesting, but the writer does not question the aesthetic nature of his work. It is a dark pastiche of crude styles: folk, yet not; Gothic landscape, yet not; Cajun kitsch, yet not; faux naive, yet not. The petit bourgeois buy his work because his work reenforces the cultural myth of the artist embedded in the Cajun milieu. This adds status to having the painting hanging over your fire place mantle. Finally, he is no Elemore Morgan Jr. I question the curators of this show as to why he was chosen. Could it be pressure from rich collectors to push his already inflated prices up by awarding him a retrospective over other almost unknowns like Kelly Guidry or Tom Secrest?
