Five boaters killed in canal near Houma

Houma’s The Courier is reporting that the Terrebonne Parish Sheriff’s Office has identified  five men killed Wednesday night when their boat struck a barge in Falgout Canal near La. 315.

The dead, most of whom are well-known in Lafayette's oilfield community, have been identified as follows: Michael J. Carrere, 43, of the Bayou Blue area; Carey J. Meche, 52, of Metairie; Lawrence H. Flak, 54, of Conroe, Texas; Rene J. Gauthier, 59, of Houston; and William Voss, 49, of Katy, Texas. The INDsider has learned that the men were in the area for the annual Houma Oilmen's Fishing Invitational.

The paper reported that Wildlife and Fisheries officials believe the accident occurred between 9 and 10 p.m. last night based on the time a person with the group dropped them off near the waterway. The Courier also noted that workers on the barge discovered the wreckage of the 24-foot dual console boat at around 9 a.m. today and subsequently notified police.
