Acadiana players await calls in today's Major League draft

by Nathan Stubbs

Several Acadiana players will be waiting for their name to be called in today’s Major League Baseball draft, which gets under way at 5 p.m. LSU junior right fielder Jared Mitchell, a New Iberia native and Westgate High graduate, is expected to go in the first round. Meanwhile, several UL-Lafayette players will find out whether they’ll get a crack at the pros this year. Potential draft picks from UL include pitchers Zach Osborne, Justin Robichaux and Greg Wilborn, as well as junior first baseman/designated hitter Scott Hawkins and junior-college transfer shortstop Kevin Lovelace. Of these players, Osborne and Wilborn are seen as the most likely selections.

Also of local interest is recent St. Thomas More graduate Brody Colvin, a potential first round pick. Colvin already has a scholarship deal lined up with LSU and, depending on how late he is drafted, may decide that the pros should wait. Read a story on Colvin in today’s Daily Advertiser.
