Gaines Award winner to read at UL

by Walter Pierce

The Ernest J. Gaines Center at UL Lafayette will host a reading Monday by Jeffery Renard Allen, winner of the 2010 Ernest J. Gaines Award for Literary Excellence. The annual $10,000 prize sponsored by the Baton Rouge Area Foundation recognizes African-American writers of excellence.

Dr. Allen teaches creative writing at Queens College of City University of New York and at the New School. This will be his second appearance at UL, following a 2003 reading for the “Significant Voices” series featuring African-American writers. Allen was awarded this year’s Gaines award for his story collection Holding Pattern.

The reading is the first in an ongoing series of literary events sponsored by the Gaines Center at UL. Allen’s reading will take place at 1 p.m. Monday in the Louisiana Room at Dupré Library. The event is free and open to the public.
