Southern Open call for artists

by Mary Tutwiler

Chilly February, hunkered down inside, it’s a good time to take inventory and think about the future. For artists, that means evaluating recent work, winnowing through the explosions of creative energy and choosing the most provocative piece of the year. There is reason beyond seasonal instinct, the most important juried show of the year here in southwest Louisiana opens in May, and the call for artists has begun.

The Acadiana Center for the Arts is now accepting artwork submissions for its annual juried exhibition, the Southern Open, which will take place in the Main Gallery at the AcA from May 8 through July 24. The Southern Open features artists from five southern states: Texas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama and Florida. All types of original media including painting, drawing, sculpture, photography, video and installation are applicable. Application postmark deadline is March 22 for artwork submissions. Submission forms can be downloaded by clicking here.

There is a non-refundable entry fee of $20, which includes four artwork submissions. Artists may submit additional artwork for $5 per submission, up to 10 artworks total. Members of the AcA are exempt from the initial entry fee (four artwork submissions). Additional artwork submissions are $5 per entry, up to 10 artworks total.

All awards will be based on original artwork. Three cash awards will be awarded as jurors’ picks. Two $600 cash awards and one $1,000 award will be announced at the artist reception on May 8 during ArtWalk. The top award winner will also receive a solo exhibition as part of the AcA’s Side Gallery Series during May 2011.
