Brody Colvin's dash to the big leagues took a troubling detour Saturday night on Jefferson Street. The 19-year-old St. Thomas More graduate, who passed up an LSU scholarship last year after reportedly being offered a $900,000 signing bonus by the Philidelphia Phillies to turn pro, was arrested at 1:07 a.m Sunday outside of City Bar in downtown Lafayette. He was released from jail after being charged with misdemeanor counts of disturbing the peace, simple battery and resisting an officer. According to the arrest report, police say they observed a large fight on the patio of City Bar, in which Colvin was involved. When the bar owner and police went to break up the fight, they grabbed Colvin, who began "swinging his fist wildly." Colvin continued to resist but was eventually handcuffed with the assistance of several officers, according to the report.
The trouble didn't end there. Soon afterward, Brody Colvin's 26-year-old brother, Littleton Colvin, was also arrested. In the affidavit, Littleton's arresting officer writes:
The accused approached officers after his brother was involved in a fight and resisted officers. The accused made threats toward me stating "he was going to get me." The accused was told several times to move away from my police unit and to stop yelling. After several more times, the accused yelled and pointed at me and stated I was going to get it. The accused was then advised he was under arrest.
Brody's arrest was first reported by the Philidelphia press, who were unable to reach Phillies representatives for comment. With a 90+ mile per hour fastball, Colvin was considered a raw talent that could go as high as the first round of last year's Major League draft. He slipped to the seventh round, but the Phillies aggressively courted him to sign and bypass college. Colvin agreed to terms shortly before the deadline. Since signing, he made one appearance for the Gulf Coast and then was sent to the Florida Instructional League.
