The folks at Pack & Paddle are hosting a "Keep the Atchafalaya Wild Night" to raise awareness and possibly even drum up a little fundraising.
The Atchafalaya Basin holds the title of being the largest swamp in the U.S. A combination of wetlands and river delta area where the Atchafalaya River and the Gulf of Mexico converge, it covers an area roughly 20 miles wide and 150 miles long, filled with bayous, bald cypress swamps, and marshes. As anyone can attest who has driven, floated, or paddled through it, it is a sight to behold. Like an ancient, primordial time-machine window into the past, it reminds us of where we came from with its stoic beauty and infinite mystery. This amazing wilderness is located only a stone's throw from Lafayette and offers all of us an incredible opportunity for adventure. It will be a really cool evening focusing on many of the environmental problems associated with the basin. There will be live music by folk and roots troubadour and activist Drew Landry as well as a talk by Atchafalaya BasinKeeper Dean Wilson, in which he'll outline what the BasinKeeper program is doing and how you can get involved. After that activist Harold Schoeffler will address some of the problems that exist within the basin as well as talk about the possibility of making the basin into a national park. In addition, there will be a short presentation on the cross-basin trip authored by Pack & Paddle owner John Williams, which was featured in the Green Issue of The Independent Weekly. Artist Jon McManus has donated his art work to raise funds for the Atchafalaya BasinKeeper program. Attendees will have the opportunity to purchase a special greeting card created by Jon that depicts a beautiful basin scene. To cap the gathering off, there will be a silent auction to benefit the Atchafalaya BasinKeeper program. It's all for a good cause with good people behind it.
