Gardening symposium in New Iberia

by Mary Tutwiler

Tomorrow morning the Iberia Parish Library will present its annual Gardening Symposium. This year's theme is "Home Grown Solutions: Sustainable and Hurricane Resistant Landscapes." Dr. Buck Abbey from the LSU School of Landscape Architecture will be the first speaker. Abbey has been instrumental in writing and promulgating "green laws" such as landscaping ordinances and city tree ordinances. Following Abbey, UL horticulture professor Jim Foret will explain proper techniques for pruning young trees. There will also be a plant exchange: bring a plant, take a new one home.

The gardening community in New Iberia is a lively one, it's always worthwhile to attend these talks and meet fellow green-thumbers. They also know the best places to each lunch in the Berry, just ask. The doors to the Parkview branch will open at 8 a.m. The program begins at 8:30 a.m. and should end by 12:30 p.m. For more information call the Iberia Parish Library at 364-7024.
