The Lafayette City-Parish Council will vote Tuesday evening on an introductory ordinance that if approved on a final vote in two weeks would clear the way for the creation of a charter commission.
The Lafayette City-Parish Council will vote Tuesday evening on an introductory ordinance that if approved on a final vote in two weeks would clear the way for the creation of a charter commission "for the purpose of reviewing, studying and proposing revisions, additions or amendments to the Home Rule Charter."
The ordinance is sponsored by CPC Chairman Jay Castille of District 2, one a member of the charter committee that on Feb. 1 voted unanimously to forward a deconsolidation ordinance to the council for consideration. That ordinance was deferred for 90 days when it went before the CPC on March 9. Since that time, Castille has said he believes the current consolidated charter can be improved and that deconsolidation is too drastic a step for curing what ails Lafayette Consolidated Government - a sentiment echoes by some on the council and many in the community.
