It began in 1960, the year after the Louisiana Legislature had declared Breaux Bridge the Crawfish Capitol of the world, as a spin-off of the town's Centennial Celebration. Fifty years later, the Breaux Bridge Crawfish Festival is a world renown celebration of Louisiana's most distinct crustacean. Opening ceremonies kick off at 4:30 p.m. today, followed immediately by the celebrity crawfish eating contest. Tonight's music lineup includes the Pine Leaf Boys, Feufollet and High Performance. Tomorrow's schedule features much more music, as well as zydeco and Cajun dance lessons and contests, crawfish races and another crawfish eating contest.
