1. MOTHERS LOVE LAVENDER
As Proust's madeleine is to taste and memory, the scent of lavender is to sense of place. Lavender's powerful sharp perfume can take you to the flowering fields of Provence or the closet of your grandmother in one pungent whiff. Lafayette company SOI compiles a lavender and rosemary scented trio: bath salt, bar soap and candle. The candles are made of soy wax, producing a clean burning flame without the sooty side effects of paraffin-based candles. But the real test is the scent, true French lavender, as fresh as the wind off the slopes of Mont Sainte-Victoire. If you can't take your mother to Provence for Mother's Day, this gift package is the next best thing, $30, at Pascale Spa, 232-6449. - Mary Tutwiler

2. MOTHER'S DAY AT THE MOON
It is time to thank all of the mothers of the world and let them know you appreciate everything they do. If it weren't for women, we'd be a bunch of Ape Men running around this place, burning, looting, warring, partying, and crying a lot because we don't have someone soft to sleep next to at night when we're tired of being tough. Dudes would be a mess. We'd be living in garage dumps and there would be flies everywhere. Thank God for women. The Blue Moon Saloon is hosting a big Mother's Day bash. Women will be taking over the Moon for Mother's Day. Music will be provided by the all female trio Lâche Pas - Madeline Powers on accordion/fiddle/vocals, Linda Castle on fiddle/vocals and Andrea Rubinstein on guitar. They play traditional French music, two-steps, waltzes, back porch-style twin fiddles tunes. All of it sung in French. Opening the show will be the Chelsea Ellison Trio. Mother's Day at the Moon goes down on May 9. - Dege Legg

3. MAMA'S BY YOU
If you've ever read Goodnight Moon to your child, (and who hasn't, over and over) you know the beauty of repetition and the soothing effect it has on a sleepy little one. Dianne de Las Casas, New Orleans author and mother, has written a lullaby of a story filled with the sounds of chirping crickets, humming mosquitoes, and hush-a-bye rhythms to lull a little one to sleep. The book, Mama's Bayou, is beautifully illustrated by Holly Stone-Barker using a cut-paper collage technique that creates great depth and texture, fascinating to both mother and child. Published by Pelican Publishing, the book retails for $16.99 at real and virtual bookstores everywhere. - MT
