CPC to hold special annexation meeting

The Lafayette City-Parish Council Chairman Jay Castille will hold a special May 18 meeting to essentially re-annex Les Vieux Chenes Golf Course and Fabacher Field.

The Lafayette City-Parish Council Chairman Jay Castille will hold a special May 18 meeting to essentially re-annex Les Vieux Chenes Golf Course and Fabacher Field.

The newest development in the land battles in south Lafayette Parish comes after the city of Broussard notified Lafayette Consolidated Government that it intended to file suit against LCG, accusing LCG of not following state annexation laws when the CPC voted to annex the golf course on April 26. That meeting nearly three weeks ago was held 24 hours after LCG published notice of the meeting in The Daily Advertiser, clearly a move to catch Broussard off guard; Broussard a week earlier had blocked Lafayette from annexing the golf course by purchasing a strip of land Lafayette needed to annex to reach the field.

In a press release issued late Friday afternoon, LCG Attorney Pat Ottinger calls Broussard's latest challenge to Lafayette's annexation of the city-funded golf course a "hypertechnical reading of state annexation law." The request for the special meeting comes about 24 hours after the city of Lafayette announced plans to annex more than 200 acres on the newly opened Ambassador Caffery Parkway extension - land Broussard has also been looking to annex.

In Friday's press release, Durel says he doesn't believe the re-do is necessary, but asked for the special meeting "out of an abundance of caution. The May 18 meeting would reintroduce the annexation ordinance; if approved, it will be voted on for final adoption on June 1.
