Sand bar barrier stops oil at Elmer's Island

For graphic proof that the idea of rebuilding Louisiana's barrier islands as a long sand bar to block the flow of oil into the state's marshes can work, check out this photo.

The photo depicts a rock and sand barrier that effectively plugged a 700-foot gap on Elmer's Island, near Grand Isle. For more info, the New York Times has an article discussing the pros and cons of the sand bar barrier.
