No one on the Senate Education Committee objected Thursday to House Bill 942, a proposal to ban local school board members from interfering with the superintendent in the hiring, firing or transfer of teachers and other school employees. School boards, rather, would focus only on issues of policy.
The legislation would also require a two-thirds majority of school board members to fire a superintendent before his contract is up.
The Advocate reported today that Republican state Sen. Conrad Appel of Metairie, who is a member of the Education Committee, said he has seen school board members get involved in school pizza contract issues and the color of awning on school properties.
"I just believe it is extremely important that school board members focus on policy," Appel said. "All the other issues should not even be on the table."
