From the T-Maurice Racetrack in Bosco to the Carencro Raceway, unsanctioned horse races were a popular pastime for many people in Southwest Louisiana. Amateur jockeys rode on makeshift tracks while spectators made extravagant bets on the races. These races paved the way for the Triple Crown race successes of local jockeys such as Calvin Borel, Kent Desormeaux and Eddie Delahoussaye, as well as provided a venue for sharing information about breeding and training.
Photographer Philip Gould documented many of the old bush tracks in Southwest Louisiana. On Sept. 14, will moderate a panel discussion as well as share images and memories of the once-popular pastime. The panel will include trainers Don Stemmans and AJ Credeur as well as former jockeys Mark Guidry and Keith Patin.
