Breaking with the recommendation of a review committee, Lafayette City-Parish President Joey Durel has awarded an almost $400,000 contract for GPS monitoring of consolidated government vehicles to Acadian Monitoring Services, a subsidiary of Acadian Ambulance.

Durel's office announced the contract late Friday afternoon.
Lafayette Consolidated Government's Automated Vehicle Location System is touted as a means of dramatically reducing the cost of operating a fleet by making the fleet more efficient and by holding employees accountable for their use of government vehicles. Last year, the City-Parish Council cut the funding for the system, but Durel vetoed the funding cut and restored the money.
In July, an LCG review committee recommended that GPS Insight of Scottsdale, Ariz., be awarded the contract based on a review of the 23 proposals sent in by companies vying for the contract, scoring businesses on a percentage basis through reference checks and how well they matched all the criteria set forth in a request for proposals put out by LCG at the beginning of the year. According to the review committee's scoring system, GPS Insight ranked first with a score of 89.4 percent, followed by WebTech Wireless of Burnaby, British Columbia, with a score of 89 percent. Acadiana Monitoring Services scored 82.4 percent.
Durel had the option of selecting one of the top three recommendations.
"In addition to their excellent qualifications for this project and their experience in this arena, I am further pleased that we have selected a company who is already a part of our parish's Emergency Operations Center team," Durel says in a press release. "The selection of Acadian Monitoring Services for the AVL system allows us to leverage existing infrastructure and expertise and will improve our access to important information during an emergency."
Terms of the agreement have not been finalized.
