Based on an inspiring true story, Secretariat chronicles the journey of the 1973 Triple Crown winner. Housewife and mother Penny Chenery (Lane) agrees to take over her ailing father's Virginia-based Meadow Stables, despite her lack of horse-racing knowledge. Chenery - with the help of veteran trainer Lucien Laurin (Malkovich) - manages to navigate the male-dominated business, ultimately producing the first Triple Crown winner in 25 years and what may be the greatest racehorse of all time.
The movie's racing scenes were shot at the old Evangeline Downs in Carencro, which was converted into several race tracks for different races. For more on the movie, which is rated PG, click here.
On Thursday, Oct. 7, the Grand 16 on Johnston Street rolled out the red carpet for a screening of the movie, preceded by a reception offering live music, food, drinks, photo ops and lots of schmoozing.
Most of the movie's crew members are from Louisiana, lots of locals appear as extras (you'll recognize some faces in the racing scenes), and most of the film editing was done at the Louisiana Immersive Technologies Enterprise.
