Retail icon Herbert Abdalla dead at 92

Herbert Abdalla, one of two brothers who developed Abdalla's Department Store into one of Louisiana's premier retailers, has died. Abdalla died in his sleep Thursday night, according to his son, Harold. He was 92. Herbert Abdalla and his brother Ed turned the family store into one of the finest retail centers in Louisiana during its heyday in the 1960s and '70s. "Mr. Herbert," as he was known to many, played a pivotal role in the development of UL Lafayette and was instrumental in the city's expansion during its go-go years of the oil boom. Funeral arrangements will be handled by Delhomme Funeral Home with visitation on Sunday beginning at 12:30 p.m. and a 2 p.m. service in Delhomme Chapel of the Flowers.

Burial is at the Calvary Mausoleum, followed by a reception at the Petroleum Club.
