State Sen. Nick Gautreaux has resigned his District 26 seat to take a post with the Department of Motor Vehicles. Gautreaux's counterpart in the House, Rep. Jonathan Perry, says he plans to run for Gautreaux's vacated Senate seat. State Sen. Nick Gautreaux, D-Abbeville, has resigned his District 26 seat to take a post with the Department of Motor Vehicles. In a press release issued Wednesday morning, Gautreaux's counterpart in the House, Rep. Jonathan Perry, R-Abbeville, says he plans to run for Gautreaux's vacated Senate seat.

"As a husband and father of four I care deeply about the future direction of our state," Perry says in the release. "It is important that we have conservative leadership in the state Senate now more than ever as we face the looming budget crisis." Perry is an attorney by training and also moonlights as a "Cajun comedian."

Calls by The Independent to the offices of both Gautreaux and Perry were not returned Wednesday morning.
