by Walter Pierce

Qualifying for the race will be held Jan. 12-19.

Senate President Joel  Chaisson has designated Feb. 19 as the primary date for a special election to fill the seat of soon-to-resign District 26 Sen. Nick Gautreaux, who is leaving the Legislature for the post of commissioner of the state Office of Motor Vehicles. The general election for the seat is scheduled for March 19. Gautreaux's resignation is effective Dec. 26.

Qualifying for the race will be held Jan. 12-19. District 26 comprises all of Vermilion Parish and parts of Acadia, Lafayette and St. Landry parishes. Chaisson's office says the Senate will maintain the district office to serve constituents while the seat is vacant.

First-term state Rep. Jonathan Perry, R-Abbeville, indicated Wednesday he intends to seek the seat.
