It's Twelfth Night; Mardi Gras to the world!

by Leslie Turk

Unlike many local bakeshops that have had King Cakes out for days (you know who you are!), Keller's Bakery will serve no King Cake before its time - which is, of course, Twelfth Night (Jan. 6).

Custom dictates that the Mardi Gras season commences each year on The Night of The Epiphany, and any reveler worth his or her purple, green and gold wouldn't dream of partaking before then. Little plastic babies nestled in scrumptious rings of dough lined the glass cases at Lafayette's favorite downtown bakery this morning. For many, including this writer, Keller's offers the king of King Cakes (favorite flavor: amaretto walnut). Don't let the construction on Jefferson Street deter your visit. Keller's good neighbor Whitney Bank has reserved some spaces in its parking lot for those Keller's fly-bys. Just turn off Lee Avenue onto Caillouet Street behind The Filling Station and enjoy.
