Qualifying for Senate 26 opens Wednesday

Two candidates have already announced their intention to seek the seat.

Candidates for the vacant state Senate District 26 seat will begin qualifying Wednesday for the Feb. 19 primary. Qualifying last through Wednesday, Jan. 19. The seat was vacated by former Sen. Nick Gautreaux, an Abbeville Democrat, who recently to the post as commissioner of the state Office of Motor Vehicles.

Two candidates have already announced their intention to seek the seat: First-term state Rep. Jonathan Perry, R-Abbeville, declared his candidacy on the day Gautreaux's resignation was announced December; Erath businessman and Vermilion Parish Police Juror Nathan Granger, a Democrat, announced last week.

District 26 comprises all of Vermilion Parish and parts of Acadia, Lafayette and St. Landry parishes.
