Louisiana earns 16th place in a new ranking of the nation's most tolerant states. The Daily Beast website compiled the ranking using federal and state data on such things as incidents of hate crimes, discrimination cases filed per capita and responses to poll questions.
Louisiana scored particularly well in hate crime incidents - 0.5 per 100,000 residents - earning the sixth best rank among states. However, the Bayou State earned a goose egg for its tolerance of gay rights, a score based on residents' support for gay marriage and legal rights afforded to same-sex couples.
The top five most tolerant states, in descending order, are Wisconsin, Maryland, Illinois, Pennsylvania and Hawai'i. Wyoming is ranked as the least tolerant state.
