CINEMA ON THE BAYOU
Cinema on the Bayou Film Festival hits Lafayette Jan. 26-30 with four days of independent film screenings and industry-related schmooze and shenanigans. Participating venues include Acadiana Center for the Arts, Cite des Arts, LITE, Pack & Paddle and the Lafayette Parish South Regional Library. Filmmakers will be in attendance from New Orleans, Shreveport, Austin, New York and Toronto, Canada. Films include Aaron Walker's Bury the Hatchet, Harry Shearer's The Big Uneasy, as well as Disfarmer: A Portrait of America, Win Riley's Walker Percy: A Documentary Film, Shreveporter William Joyce's The Fantastic Flying Books of Mr. Morris Lessmore, Tim Watson's The Music's Gonna Get You Through, and Carnivalesque Films' Sweethearts of the Prison Rodeo and many others.
MAYBE BABY
Robbie Taylor is back again with another annual installment of his Buddy Holly tribute show. An often overlooked cultural asset, but never overrated, Taylor is Lafayette's reigning king of Gulf Coast rockabilly twang. He was on it before it was cool. And he ain't leaving. Go check out the Robbie Taylor Trio's (with Jeff Leblanc and Shannon May) tribute to Buddy Holly on Jan. 28 at the Wild Salmon.
ARTMOSPHERE
Artmosphere goes full-funk this weekend. If you like to move your butt, this would be the weekend to do it. Big Sam's Funky Nation plays on Jan. 28. Bonerama funks on Jan. 29 and That One Guy and DJ Judd Kennedy rock the haus on Jan. 30.
POP, HORNS & GONK
New Orleans' indie pop ensemble Empress Hotel teams up with imagineIAM and Brass Mimosa for a full-on amalgamation bill of melodic pop, skronk & Gonk experimentalism and horns. They all play the Blue Moon on Jan. 29.
THE FORBIDDEN DANCE
You like it spicy, dicey, freaky and weird? Hell yes. Then you may dig Soledad Barrio and Noche Flamenca - the world-renowned flamenco dance company - at the Heymann Center on Jan. 26.
