District 7 City-Parish Councilman Don Bertrand has been selected to serve a three-year term as the committee vice-chair of the American Public Power Association's Policy Maker Council. The Washington, D.C.-based APPA represents the nation's 2,000 not-for-profit, community utility companies, including Lafayette Utilities System. The group's raison d'être is promoting legislation that benefits community utilities and opposing laws considered harmful. The council meets at least twice a year and also lobbies elected officials and congressional staff in support of its agenda.

A landman by trade, Bertrand currently serves as chairman of the Lafayette Public Utilities Authority, the five-member panel of C-P councilmen that represents a majority of city residents and serves as the governing authority for LUS.

"This appointment is a testament to the outstanding work and management of our citizen-owned utility system we have in Lafayette," Bertrand says in a press release.  "I, along with fellow APPA members, will continue to fight for legislation that will allow us to continue to provide the excellent service that our residents have come to expect from LUS."
