by Walter Pierce

Nearly 20,000 Louisiana taxpayers who failed to file a 2007 tax return could be eligible for a tax refund averaging $663. Nearly 20,000 Louisiana taxpayers who failed to file a 2007 tax return could be eligible for a tax refund averaging $663, according to the Internal Revenue Service.

The IRS says 19,500 state taxpayers didn't file returns in 2007. The window to do so - and to receive any refund - closes April 18. More than one million taxpayers nationwide are in line to receive $1.1 billion in refunds from Uncle Sam. There is no penalty for filing a late return that qualifies for a refund. However, taxpayers' 2007 refunds will be withheld if they also failed to file returns in subsequent years.

Current and prior year tax forms and instructions are available on the "Forms and Publications" page of irs.gov or by calling (800) TAX-FORM (829-3676).
