URANUS
The Lafayette Science Museum has some cool stuff cooking. "Giant Worlds" is their latest exhibit. It explores the extraordinary giant planets like Jupiter, Saturn, Neptune and Uranus, orbiting our sun. Visitors will be able to peer through a replica of the telescope used by Galileo, seeing the giant planets as he did over 400 years ago. This exhibition promises to engage visitors of all ages through educational videos, games, interactive elements and scale models. The Lafayette Science Museum hosts the Space Science Institute exhibit "Giant Worlds" through May 13. The entry fee is $5 for adults, $3 for seniors age 62 and up, and $2 for children age 417. Younger children are admitted free. There is no extra charge for planetarium programs. TURTLE ISLAND
Friends of Elemore is a new organization whose sole purpose is to raise funds in support of the Elemore Morgan Jr. Visual Arts Endowment. They present the Turtle Island Quartet with a special guest appearance by Michael Doucet at the AcA's James Devin Moncus Theatre in downtown Lafayette on March 11. Since its inception in 1985, the Turtle Island Quartet has been a force in the creation of bold, new trends in music for strings. Winner of the 2006 and 2008 Grammy Awards for Best Classical Crossover Album, Turtle Island fuses the classical quartet esthetic with contemporary American musical styles.
LAUGHTER IS THE RELIGION
Laughter is the greatest religion. And laughter returns to Lafayette in two official capacities this weekend. Comedians Ricky Briggs and Joseph Lymous host a two-man show at AOC on March 11 & 12. Tickets are $10. On the other side of town, Goodwill Industries of Acadiana is presents Cajun Comic Relief XIX: Good Laughs for Goodwill on March 12. All proceeds from the event go to various services that Goodwill provides. Pre-show entertainment will be provided by Matt Ewing and Sean Vidrine & da' Classics. Performing for the show are Marvin Lee, T-Frog and John Paul Morgan (aka "Ragin Cajun") as well as the three finalists from the Last Couillon Standing.
LISPS
Brooklyn band The Lisps traffic in roots music and quirky pop with an indie rock sensibility. They're touring in support of their sophomore CD Are We at the Movies? The Lisps play Artmosphere on March 12.
ACAPULCO GOLD
Photo man Phillip Gould has got him a band called Rio Luminoso. They play "romantic music from exotic places." That conjures visions of coconut-umbrella drinks and sarongs. I can dig that. Rio Luminoso play Café des Amis March 9.
NUNU's
Joe Hall and the Louisiana Cane Cutters will be performing at the new NuNu's facility in Arnaudville. The show will feature 13-year old fiddle player Zack Fusilier with a guest appearance by Creole accordion legend Nolten Simien. The address of the new NuNu's location is 1510 Hwy 93 in Arnaudville.
