CPC selects redistricting plan

by Walter Pierce

The vote came following some squabbling among councilmen over the competing plans. The Advertiser is reporting today that the City-Parish Council, choosing among six redistricting plans, selecting plan No. 5 in an introductory vote during a special meeting Monday. The final vote on the plan will occur in two weeks.

Based on the total number of residents in each district in Plan 5, it is presumably the least disruptive to current district boundaries; majority-black districts 3 and 4, which have become severely under-populated over the last decade, pick up fewer residents under this plan than in other plans, each becoming home to roughly 23,000 residents while Councilman Sam Doré's 6th District in the center of town would grow by nearly 4,000 to become the most populous with more than 26,000 residents. It remains to be seen whether a disparity that large - the feds prefer districts have only a few percentage points deviation in size - will be vetted by state and federal authorities.
